I left Chanute although I wanted to kill some time in Walmart. The way from there was through more farmland. The oil rigs around here were more modern, some even implemented with solar panels.
There weren’t any places to stop until just over mid way. The city of Toronto lured me into a café for lunch. The owner welcomed me in and recommended the quarter-pound mushroom Swiss burger. It was so good I forgot what his name was. If you ever make it to Toronto, KS, make sure you make your way to The Café and have that burger. I noticed a Mac near the back and asked for them to clear my phone since the mp3’s have prevented me from taking any more pictures. They helped me out with this and told me to stock up at the corner gas station before heading to Eureka since there are no more rest stops in between the two places.
The gas station attendant asked me to sign their guestbook that has been logging riders for over 6 years. He also told me that from here on I would be traveling through the Flint Hills. The crops would now be at a minimum because this area is prime grazing land due to the abundance of bluestem grasses.
The 20 miles in between the two cities went by quickly. The hills rolled over slowly and there was a steady tailwind. I made it into Eureka in the late afternoon and set out for the local park. There were already three tourers here, Joe, Julia, and Tim. They had also set out from Chanute this morning.
Tomorrow’s destination will be Newton, KS. There is a 38 mile expanse from Cassoday to Newton with no services.
